Skin concern

Loose skin & fine lines

Skin laxity

Softening jawline, crepey texture and fine lines — what's happening structurally and what non-surgical treatment can realistically achieve.

What it actually is

Skin firmness comes from collagen and elastin in the dermis. Both decline steadily from your mid-twenties, and the drop accelerates around menopause. The visible result is a softer jawline, finer lines that linger rather than bounce back, and a crepey quality to the skin — particularly on the neck, which is thinner and often the first place people notice it.

Why it happens

  • Age-related decline in collagen and elastin production
  • Cumulative UV exposure, which degrades existing collagen
  • The drop in oestrogen around menopause, which accelerates collagen loss
  • Smoking, and significant or repeated weight fluctuation
  • Genetics, which set the baseline more than anyone likes to hear

What tends not to work

No topical cream rebuilds meaningful structural collagen — creams work at the surface, and laxity is a dermal problem. It's equally worth being clear in the other direction: energy-based treatments tighten and stimulate, but they don't remove significant excess skin. Where there's a lot of laxity, a surgical opinion is the honest answer rather than a course of treatments.

How we approach it

Energy-based treatments work by triggering your own collagen response — HIFU delivers focused ultrasound to deeper structural layers, while RF microneedling works through controlled micro-injury plus radiofrequency in the dermis. Both rely on your body doing the remodelling over the following three to six months, which means results build gradually rather than appearing immediately. Suitability depends on how much laxity there actually is, which is what the consultation establishes.

When to see a doctor instead

This is a cosmetic concern rather than a medical one. But sudden changes in skin texture or elasticity that aren't age-related, or laxity alongside other new symptoms, are worth mentioning to your physician.

Questions

Loose skin & fine lines — common questions

How long until I see results from HIFU or RF microneedling?
Both work by stimulating your own collagen, so the change builds over roughly three to six months rather than appearing straight away. Anyone promising an immediate lift from a collagen-stimulating treatment is describing swelling, not result.
Am I too far gone for non-surgical treatment?
It depends on how much loose skin there is. Energy-based treatments tighten and stimulate but don't remove excess skin — if you'd get a much better outcome from surgery, you'll be told that at consultation rather than sold a series that can't deliver it.
